Hello Fresh – Making the Dinner Rush a Breeze

Hello Fresh: More Than Food

Hello Fresh brings you chef-curated recipes based on seasonal farm fresh ingredients, delivered to your doorstep every week.

Hello Fresh

If you’re like me, weekdays are busy and stressful, and that includes meal times. Especially meal times! Our evenings are hectic, and chaotic. Dinner time is the most stressful part of my day, and  I’m always looking for ways to make this part of my day easier. Although I am a competent cook, I rarely venture outside my safety zone. This means that, at times, our meals can be become somewhat repetitive and boring.

Hello Fresh answers all of these issues, and more. By providing everything needed for a home cooked meal, including detailed cooking instructions, they take the stress out of meal planning and meal prep. All ingredients are pre-measured, farm fresh, and delivered straight to your doorstep. Virtually everything is included with the exception of oil, sugar, and salt and pepper.

The meals are varied, and are different from meals I normally make, which adds some much needed variety to our weekly meal plans, and also has me preparing foods that I have never prepared before.

WHAT makes Hello Fresh the perfect choice?

Hello Fresh offers 3 different meal plans. The Veggie Plan, The Pronto Plan, and The Family Plan. The Veggie plan serves 2, and for The Pronto plan you can choose meals for either 2 or 4 people. The Family Plan serves 4.

Family Plan

Hello Fresh Family Plan

I received the Pronto box for 2 which included the following 3 recipes:

Hello Fresh Five-Spice Chicken Soup Hello Fresh Roasted Eggplant Linguine Hello Fresh Seared Steak and Crispy Potato Salad

Everything arrived REALLY fresh, nicely packaged with lots of ice packs for freshness. I liked that recipe ingredients (except for the meat) were separated so that there was zero guess work as to what item belongs to what recipe.

Hello Fresh

I liked that there was very little prep work to be done as everything was already pre-portioned. There was some washing/drying of produce, some vegetable chopping depending on the recipe, but including prep, all the meals were ready within about half an hour.

Hello Fresh

I really liked the variety of recipes, and they really livened up our regular weekly routine, which was getting a little stale. I make soup often, but I had never made a five-spice soup before, and it was a big hit especially with my husband.

I am not at all an adventurous eater, so something else I really liked was stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying new recipes. None of the ingredients themselves were new to me, but these were recipes that I have never made before and some of the ingredients I had never cooked with before (such as eggplant, and Bok Choy).

Hello Fresh Five-Spice Chicken Soup

Hello Fresh Roasted EggPlant Linguine

Hello Fresh Seared Steak with Crispy Potato Salad

Seared Steak with Crispy Potato Salad

My husband loved the Seared Steak with Crispy Potato Salad the most (he’s a big steak fan). He literally started drooling when he saw the steak before I even started cooking it.  This was a quality piece of beef. It was so tender that we could cut it with a butter knife.   The crispy potato salad was a HUGE hit. Chris loved it so much he’s already begging me to make it again.

Final Thoughts:

My biggest concern with a service like this is portion size. No one wants to be hungry AFTER they have just finished eating dinner. With Hello Fresh that isn’t a concern.  My favourite thing about Hello Fresh were the generous portion sizes. All three recipes were large enough for both myself and my husband plus our 9 year old son.

The Five-Spice Chicken Soup, for instance, included 2 good sized boneless chicken thighs and a 200g package of Edon noodles PER PERSON/serving. Out of curiosity, I divided the Roasted Eggplant Linguine into 2 containers, and each serving filled a 5 cup container with very little room to spare. I found the portions to be generous, filling and satisfying.

Prices: (All plans include 3 meals delivered weekly)

Pronto Meal Plan 2 people $79.99/week
Pronto Meal Plan 4 people $139.99/week

Veggie Meal Plan 2 people $73.99/week

Family Meal Plan 4 people $129.99/week

I was worried about that too, and I was worried that the recipes would take longer than the 30 minutes they said but they didn’t. They instructions are so detailed, including when to start doing what that they were really easy. That I’m not totally sure. They deliver by Purolator, and I don’t think they do after hour delivery although you are allowed to set up for them to deliver at work, or you might be able to set up for delivery with a neighbour or someone you know who will be home. ~A
