March Break Field-Trips
March Break is coming, and breaks are always difficult around here as the kids get bored super easy. With only two weeks of school left before their break, I decided to start planning some affordable activities (what they call “field-trips”). We will of course visit the various neighbourhood parks, but that is all dependent on the weather. March in Calgary normally means snow, rain, or both.
This year, the Calgary Public Schools AND the Calgary Catholic Schools have March Break the same week. This rarely happens, but its great because it means that there are more Break activities available to us! In the past, a lot of the activities have coincided with the Public break, and my boys go to a Catholic school.
In Calgary, there are the “staple” attractions, but they can be expensive, especially if you have a large family like I do.
- The Calgary Zoo
- Heritage Park
- Telus Spark (Science Centre)
- Fort Calgary
- Skyline Luge Calgary
- Calgary Tower
There are also the more affordable “staple” attractions, which offer a flat Family Rate (for 2 adults and up to 4 children).
- The Hangar Flight Museum – Family Admission $32
- Bow Habitat (Fish Hatchery) – Discovery Centre Family Admission $30
- Glenbow Museum – Family Admission $40
- Calgary Leisure Centres – Family Admission $27.45
- Calgary Aquatic & Fitness Centres – Family Admission $13.80 – $16.30
- Sports Hall of Fame – Family Admission (2 adults/2 youth) $35
What I was left with was to try to figure out some “field trips” for March Break that won’t break my bank account. Outings that are fun, easily accessible by transit, and that the kids will enjoy.
Visit a Park
Visit a local playground, take a trip to a playground in another part of your city, or visit a public park. Here in Calgary we have many different parks we can access including the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Nature Centre and Fish Creek Provincial Park.
Some of the other parks in Calgary to check out are Devonian Gardens downtown (although under repair, the Playground portion has reopened to the public), Ralph Klein Park and Reader Rock Garden.
Some cities might even offer structured Nature Walks or tours. Its definitely something to check into, as these are normally free or low cost!
Visit your local Farmer’s Market!
We like to go to the Calgary Farmer’s Market in SE Calgary. What we love is that they are open YEAR ROUND!
