Play Osmo Coding Jam: Make Music & Play Beyond the Screen

Play Osmo Coding Jam

Make Music and Jam

Welcome to Osmo Coding Jam, the newest game to arrive in the Osmo lineup! The first game to launch globally that combines Coding skills with making your own Music! Make music and Jam!

Osmo is an award winning game system that will change the way your child interacts with their iPad. It is an app that you download, BUT it includes hands on play and requires something only your child has: his or her imagination! It is a unique app unlike any other that will change how your children play.

I am always looking for fun ways to keep the kids entertained, especially my youngest. Like a lot of other kids, he doesn’t always have the best attention span. Trying to keep him occupied after school so I can prepare dinner, or help his brothers with their homework, can be challenging. I normally end up giving him the iPad and telling him to find something to play but most games don’t hold his attention for more than 5 or 10 minutes.  That all changed when I introduced him to Osmo Coding Jam.

What makes Osmo Jam so awesome?

  • With Osmo Jam, your child can make their own music using the coding pieces. Yes, they can make (and share) actual music!
  • There is no finish line or final level to beat. It is an open-ended approach to music and coding, fueled with your son’s or daughter’s own creativity. The only limitation is your imagination (which is limitless)!
  • You use the coding blocks to create new songs and to unlock new characters. Each character is unique and has their own sounds. Depending on the colour and the arrow direction on the coding block, the character will play different sounds!
  • You can layer different music together just like a real DJ does, which is pretty cool.
  • The beginning of the game is a guided tour.  You play the songs the game prompts you to play. After you have unlocked three levels, the game gets really fun because now you can create your own music!
  • Osmo TV (through the app) allows you to see the music that other people are making. You can listen to the songs and even learn how to make them yourself!

Coding Jam is different from any other toy or app I have come across. I’m excited that there is an app that combines coding and creativity. The number one thing I look for when choosing games and toys for the boys is the whether it will spark their imagination. In our computer-technology based society, everything seems to be online now. We’re always connected, but that doesn’t mean we have to tune out. With Osmo, kids can be connected but tuned in to life. They can exercise their imaginations, practice their coding skills, and create some really fun music to share.

For us, Coding Jam is the perfect after school game AND after dinner (before bed) game. While Hayden is occupied on the iPad, I’m able to prepare dinner. I trust that Osmo is safe, so I feel secure letting him play, create, and use his imagination while I’m in the next room. Because Osmo is designed specifically for children aged 5-12, I know everything in the app is safe and appropriate. I also love the bonding time after dinner when he shows me what he’s been up to, and how proud he is of the music he is creating. Most of all, I love how Coding Jam fires up Hayden’s imagination in a fun, unique and positive way!

What really sets Osmo apart is that it is hands on. It isn’t just an app, it is an experience. You use both the app and the physical pieces, plus your own imagination and creativity, for hours of fun (while practicing and fine-tuning some really important skills).

The first thing that I highly recommend you do is to create a FREE myOsmo account. By linking your myOsmo account with the downloaded app, you will gain a better and more versatile experience!

The benefits of linking your myOsmo account are:

  • Create profiles to allow for multiple players on the same iPad
  • Save all progress and achievements in the cloud
  • Follow the progress of each player in one place

Coding Jam is super easy to set up, and it is not long before you’re creating your own original music!

The very first thing you need to do is to download the Osmo Coding Jam app from the app store.

coding jam

To start jamming, first you need to create your stage name. You can click on each word to change it, or just pick randomize and the game will choose one for you! Thomas picked Cool Tough Bear and Hayden used the randomize button which gave him Cheerful Stunning Mouse.

After you choose your stage name, get ready to Jam. This is like starting a “puzzle” or an “intro” mode. You will have to complete the first steps to unlock the rest of the game, but its quick and easy!

Once you have finished the practice levels, the game will unlock and you will have access to the Studio. In this section you will follow the onscreen directions and match the blocks to the bottom of the screen. You will hear the character on the screen move according to your blocks! Remember, you can move the arrows, the blocks and you can also put numbers beside them too.

You will do this three times to “layer” on three different sounds, creating a new song!

You will go through a few more “puzzle” levels where you match what is on the screen with the coding blocks. Watch the character play where and what you tell it to! After level 3, “Create Mode” will unlock and this is where the real fun begins.

Next, select the “beam area” to get started.

Pick your first character. Layer on your music with different characters and experiment with the various coding blocks. Each block does something different, so try them all out to see what each one does!

Put your first coding block in front of your iPad and follow the screen. Wait for the game to load your sounds and then watch the character(s) play your blocks of code. You can try things like a “subroutine” which is the green block with a circle on it. You can save your code this way so that you can make even more complicated music.

Once you have created your music, you can save it (and then access it by clicking on the blue record player).

Finally, you can check Osmo TV (Jam TV) to see what music other people have shared. This is updated everyday. If you like one, you can take a look and figure out how they made it.

Osmo is compatible with almost all iPad versions with the exceptions of iPad Pro 12″ and iPad 1. There are 8 other Osmo games available which all focus on different skill sets, but are all equally engaging, exciting and fun! Games include Coding Awbie, Monster, Masterpiece and Pizza Co.!

  • Coding Awbie is a fun introduction to the world of coding.
  • Monster is all about animation and bringing your drawings to life!
  • Masterpiece helps you to create beautiful one of a kind art pieces!
  • Pizza Co. is an introduction to business and numbers, but don’t worry! It is exciting, fun, and engaging!
