July 11th, 2016 (Toronto, ON) – The Citizen Restaurant + Bar will unveil its revamped menu by new co-chefs, former Chopped Canada contestant, Jonathan O’Callaghan and Binh An Nguyen, on Tuesday, July 19th, 2016.
Whenever I visit Toronto, I like to visit a different restaurant each time. The Citizen Restaurant & Bar is definitely on my list of go to places. I love vintage design and antiques. The detailed decor of the 1930’s, integration of Toronto’s history and the meticulous care from the plates to the hand made cocktails make for an atmosphere that I would certainly enjoy.
The Citizen Restaurant + Bar embraces the highbrow-lowbrow cuisine by creating dishes that remind diners of their childhood memories. The co-chefs have developed a menu that reflects the belief that sitting down to eat should always be enjoyable and fun and that the process starts with the food and those who create it.
Included in the unveiling what is anticipated to be one of the best burgers in the city, the Citizen Cheeseburger, 7oz House Ground Dry-Aged Beef Strip Loin, Secret Sauce, House-made American Cheese served with Fries Dusted in 11 Herbs & Spices. The co-chefs have been developing the burger for three years, and will honour temperatures medium rare and above to fulfill guests needs.
Other new menu highlights include Ocean Wise Yellowfin Tuna Crudo, Avocado Toast, Yuzu Gel, Wasabi Tobiko, Rice Crisps, Extra Virgin Sunflower Oil & Sesame Seeds, and the Birthday Cake dessert, a Three Tier Vanilla Cake with Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting, topped with Sprinkles and a Sparkler.
ABOUT JONATHAN O’CALLAGHAN
Toronto native Jonathan O’Callaghan first developed a curiosity for international cuisine watching his Italian mother and grandmother prepare traditional dishes for family gatherings.
After graduating from The Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, he travelled across Europe, studying classical French cuisine in Paris and Lyon and returning to his Italian roots in Palermo, Sicily.
On returning to Toronto, he developed his talent working at The Museum Tavern, C5 at the ROM and The Beverley Hotel before becoming Chef de Cuisine at Maple Leaf Tavern.
Jonny’s cooking style has earned him the accolades of his peers in the Toronto food scene and garnering him a spot on Food Network’s Chopped Canada.
ABOUT BINH AN NGUYEN
Binh An Nguyen has been passionate about food since a young age, inspired by childhood memories of hanging out in the kitchen with his mother.
Born in Vietnam and raised in Oshawa, ON, he strives to create dishes that are an explanation of his cultural roots.
Nguyen has worked in the Toronto restaurant industry for more than ten years, holding positions at The Spoke Club, Hawthorne Food and Drink, The Beverley Hotel and most recently Maple Leaf Tavern as Chef de Cuisine.
The Citizen Restaurant + Bar is where King West feels at home. It’s a place to catch the game, hang out on the patio, enjoy a cozy dinner for two or party late into the night. The Citizen is guided by a simple philosophy, if food is made with love, guests will always be happy. The Citizen blends a fresh take on local ingredients to create a unique and sharing style menu for everyone to enjoy.
