Anne of Green Gables Collectors Edition

Anne of Green Gables

LM. Montgomery‘s stories of the young orphaned girl with the fiery red hair are timeless classics. For years young girls have been sent on a journey of life, love and loss through the eyes and imagination of Anne Shirley. Forever loved in the written words contained within the novels and available to be watched in Kevin Sullivan‘s classic movies.

I fell in love with Anne Shirley when I was about 8 years old. My teacher began to read the first book to our class and from that moment on I was hooked. I went to the library, checked out and read the books so many times. I became enchanted with Anne and her life in Avonlea. I recall, at times, wishing I was Anne. She was bold, confident (something that I wasn’t) and her vivid imagination took me places where I could never go.

There are always debates about whether a movie version is equal to, surpasses or falls short of the expectations after reading the books. Although there are those who were disappointed in the fact that the movie versions strayed from the story line, I believe that Kevin Sullivan did an amazing job of bringing the books life.

Anne of Green Gables Collector’s Edition is fully restored. It contains Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea:The Sequel, Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story and Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning.

I fell in love with Meagan Follows as Anne Shirley from the moment I set eyes on her. She was everything I had envisioned Anne to be and I couldn’t picture anyone else playing her role. Schuyler Grant as Diana Barry (Anne’s bossom friend), Richard Farnsworth as Matthew Cuthbert, Johnathan Crombie as Gilbert Blythe and Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla Cuthbert couldn’t have been a better choice for the the roles. Everyone just fit into their roles as if it were fate and somehow, someway, perhaps Anne herself had chosen them.

Anne of Green Gables

Anne Shirley, an orphan girl with red hair and a temper to match is “mistakenly” sent to be adopted to Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert , a brother and sister living on a farm (Green Gables), in Prince Edward Island who wished to adopt a boy. Matthew, a kindhearted soul fell in love with Anne the moment he set eyes on her. On the other hand, Marilla, a somewhat ridged and stern lady (on the outside) was not as pleased as Matthew. Anne with her romantic ways, vivid imagination along with her way with words sent me an emotional roller coaster as I laughed, cried and smiled. Anne, not only worked her way into the hearts of those in Avonlea, but mine as well.

As I watched, I found myself yelling at my TV!! Especially when it involved Gilbert. Early on, I just knew, as I am sure a lot of others did as well, that Anne and Gilbert belonged together. Anne’s temper and her inability to hold her tongue in certain situations had me cheering and laughing many times. I think every neigbourhood has one. A Mrs. Rachel Lynde!! The lady next door who just can’t seem to keep their nose out of anyone’s business and always has an opinion or three about how others should be, think or act. She had met her match with Anne Shirley on occasion when Anne gave her a taste of her own medicine. I too had a Mrs. Rachel Lynde growing up and had a similar experience in speaking my mind. Of course, I got into trouble and had to apologize to the wicked lady. Unlike the forgiving Anne, I never did speak with our nosy neighbour lady again.

From being teased by boys at school or being made fun of because of one’s appearance be it red hair or the fact that one wears glasses. Many times I was brought back to my own childhood and situations I could relate to.

Anne of Avonlea: The Sequal

Kevin Sullivan’s movie version is loosely based on the novels Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island and Anne of the Windy Poplars. Loosely based or not, I really enjoyed Kevin’s adaptation. I am in love with all things Anne so I was just happy to be able to see her again. Anne has grown into a fine young and intelligent women. Like many women of today, Anne puts aside love and set her goals towards a career as she reaches adulthood. With her dreams in sight and her stubborn determination it would seem her life is set as Anne would only have it.

At the end of Anne of Avonlea, I was left wanting more. I was longing to know what happened with Anne and Gilbert. Did they actually get married? Did they have children? I had watched Anne grow up from a trouble finding, somewhat sassy young girl into a sophisticated young lady. I felt as if she was family and I needed to know if her and Gilbert lived happily ever after.

Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story

The Anne of Green Gables Continuing Story is an original work by Kevin Sullivan who wrote, co-produced and directed the film. In the continuing story of Anne Shirley’s life we find her pursuing her dreams of becoming an accomplished writer. I was ecstatic to find out that Anne and Gilbert were engaged and planning to marry.

What I love about Anne of Green Gables is how I relate to the story and characters. At one point, after a brief absence, Anne had returned to Avonlea to find Green Gables in shambles. She wanted to lunge at the lady living in the home who seemingly had no disregard for the land and moreover the home she grew up in. I wanted to lunge through my tv screen at the woman. I had a similar experience when I was young. I had moved out and away from home when I was 19. My mom had sold the home we grew up in. I wished I had the money to buy the home. Some time later I had taken a walk down memory lane and strolled down the street where I grew up. As I reached my childhood home where so many memories resided, I became outraged. You see, my mom was an avid gardener. She had such beautiful flower gardens all over the property. Now, the colourful landscape of summer had turned into an overgrown bed of weeds and a shadow of it’s former self. I wanted so much to rush up the stairs knocking on the door and scold the new owners and say “How dare you!” It broke my heart seeing the place like that but there was nothing I could do but walk away. I felt Anne’s pain at that moment and knew exactly how she felt.

Anne’s persistance, determination and often times stubborness catapults her into a journey where many of us dare to go. As with anything involving Anne, nothing is simple and we are taken on a journey perseverance.

Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning

The Anne of Green Gables A New Beginning has two story lines. It depicts Kevin Sullivan’s prequel and sequel. Here we discover what Anne’s true journey in life was like prior to her arriving at Green Gables and her life as an older woman.

I was so disappointed to see that Megan Follows was not cast in the role of Anne. To me, she IS Anne. Of course, I do realize that actors have conflicts in schedules or just do not want to revisit a role. I have to honestly say that I was crushed.  That said, once I got over my initial shock and began to actually take in what I was seeing, I came to like Barbara Hershey in the role of Anne. I recently discovered that Hershey was cast to closely represent LM. Montgomery herself. Hannah Endicott-Douglas did an amazing job reprising the role of the young Anne Shirley.

Kevin Sullivan’s versions bring Anne to life in a way that compliments the books. After watching the entire series, I feel complete.

Over time and through the years, I have fallen in love with so many characters and the people who played the roles. It always saddens me by their loss.

Jonathan Crombie-48 (Gilbert Blythe) passed away on April 15, 2015.
Richard Farnsworth-80 (Matthew Cuthbert) passed away on October 6, 2000.
Colleen Dewhurst-67 (Marilla Cuthbert) passed away on August 22, 1991.

May they forever Rest In Peace

When the series came out I looked so forward to watching every episode and the thing I loved most of all was the opening scene before each episode started. Someone I knew had family that had a cottage near the farm that Road to Avonlea was filmed at. I use to beg to be invited to their cottage hoping to see some filming in action, but no such luck.

I watched them so many times as a kid and loved all the characters and actors so much! I have fond memories of watching Anne of Green Gables as a kid at my grandma’s with my sister during summer break. We would eat mint chocolate chip ice cream and watch Anne! My favorite memories are probably Rainbow Valley, as I loved reading about the Ministers’s childrens shenanigans. My sister and I even made our own Rainbow Valley in our backyard! The fondest memories I have of this fabulous show was that I was able to watch, and enjoy the Series with my wife and daughter who grew to love Anne in a very special way. She wanted to be determined, and head-strong just like her favourite TV character. My daughter is now grown and has a family of her own, and I’d love to win this for her so the two of us can share it together with her young daughter. I’m absolutely certain my granddaughter will fall in love with Anne Of Green Gables, in much the sameway as my daughter did many years ago.
