Highlights from our BC Road Trip
& Family Vacation
The first couple weeks of August saw us go on our first family vacation (and first road trip) in over 9 years. We drove out to Vancouver Island, and enjoyed our drive through the Rocky Mountains despite the smoke from the BC Wildfires. Despite some issues with my youngest two boys, and their conflicting personalities, we had a great time visiting some of the beautiful places in BC that we’ve never been to before (and a couple that we have).
August 4th: Still in Alberta near Lake Louise
The Enchanted Forest (near Revelstoke BC)
Chris has always wanted to check out The Enchanted Forest. He had driven past it many times, but never ventured in. On our way to Vancouver Island we spent about 90 minutes walking the trails/pathways. Cute little roadside attraction.
We took a quick break from driving to stretch our legs in Hope. Very pretty and peaceful area.
The Petting Zoo was one of the highlights for the boys, mostly because of the baby “lap goats.”
Witty’s Lagoon, Metchosin BC
The skies were grey from the BC Wildfires, but it was a beautiful day otherwise. The water was shallow and warm, and the sand was perfect for building sand castles. There were tons of shells on the beach (although nothing really special), and Chris even swam with some seals when he went off into deeper waters. The hiking trail took us about half hour through an old growth forest with beautiful old trees.
New Castle Island Marine Provincial Park, Nanaimo BC
We had to take a small 12 passenger ferry to get to New Castle Island, where we spent a couple hours exploring the beach, finding small crabs, seashells, and an assortment of “dead things.” The boys mostly enjoyed the dead things. The water was shallow and not too cold, and there was a nice sandy beach for the boys to play in as well.
Wildplay – Nanaimo BC
Chris’ Bucket List has always included a bungee jump, so when we took our day trip out to Nanaimo to visit New Castle Island, we also made a pit stop at WildPlay.
Sooke Potholes, Sooke BC
By far, my favourite place that we visited on Vancouver Island was the Sooke Potholes. Lots of swimming areas, the water wasn’t too cold the day we went, and it was crystal clear. Unlike the beaches, the water here is fresh water, and it was just beautiful. The boys gathered up rocks, and waded around the water, and there were some great hiking trails with beautiful old trees.
August 16: Almost home, driving past Golden BC (very smokey due to the Wildfires)
Andrea resides in Calgary, Alberta, and is the proud mom to five boys between the ages of 7-23. Running mainly on coffee and sarcasm, in her spare time she enjoys listening to Canadian Rock, watching Calgary Flames hockey, reading YA Dystopian novels, and binge watching Netflix.
