Carnivore Club. Meat. MEAT. I know! Sounds delicious. If you’re like Chris, you probably don’t need any more information beyond the word CARNIVORE. But, for those who are a little more curious, Carnivore Club is a cured meat of the month club. Each box is filled with 4-6 handcrafted, delicious cured meats from top artisans around the world.

A one month, no commitment, membership has a one time fee of $55. A recurring membership is $50 a month, and you can choose from a monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly subscription. Shipping is FREE.

September’s Carnivore Club box is themed around The Great Canadian Meat Company featuring Kurtzie’s Gourmet Deli and features 6 different salami products.

The Great Canadian Meat Company was founded in 1992, in Whitby, Ontario, Canada as a two-man operation with their flagship product, our Authentic Dry Pepperoni. Since then they have expanded the brand to include Kurtzie’s Gourmet Deli, branching out into specialty sausages and salami products.

September Monthly Meat Menu – Salami

  • Hot Venison Salami
    Super lean venison meat makes for a salami with an almost crumbly texture, without the heavy fat that distinguishes a lot of pork salami.
  • Hot Smoked Chorizo
    With a bold Canadian twist in its lively seasoning blend, this classic Spanish style of bright red spicy salami stands out for its memorable blend of flavourful and hot.
  • Merlot Handcrafted Salami
    With a sweet and tannic aroma, this carefully made old-world style salami is subtly flavoured with the distinctive red wine.
  • Turkey & Cranberry Salami
    The tart sharpness of cranberry is a welcome counterpoint to the mild, homey taste of turkey.
  • Mild Smoked Chubber
    This recipe is simple and clean with very little in the way of dramatic added flavours or spices. Just that warming campfire suggestion of smoke, and the best of Canadian pork.

My husband is generally not overly excited about helping me with my reviews, but this is one of the few exceptions over the past year. He claimed this, and his eyes lit up like the boys’ do on Christmas morning. Chris’ favourite thing to snack on is meat, and his idea of a meatless Monday includes bacon. I wanted to do a Charcuterie Board for this review, but Chris had other plans. He simply couldn’t wait. So, instead, we’ve been snacking on the salami in between meals. Chris has also been using the salami as a side dish because he feels the best accompaniment to meat is more meat.

Hot Venison Salami

I don’t eat spicy foods, and I don’t eat venison, so this one was 100% for Chris. This was the first one that Chris dug into, and his favourite of all the salamis that we were sent. He said the venison taste was strong, and that this was the perfect mix of wild and heat for him.

Hot Smoked Chorizo

Chris was thrilled to have another spicy salami that he didn’t need to share. He actually ate this in one sitting as a pre-dinner snack. He said it had just the right amount of heat, and was full of flavour.

Merlot Handcrafted Salami

Both Chris and I enjoyed the red wine salami. I’m not a wine drinker, but the merlot was not overwhelming or overpowering. This salami had a really smooth texture, there was a really nice underlying sweetness, and I really enjoyed it. Out of the three salamis that I tried, this was my favourite.

Turkey & Cranberry Salami

I love turkey, and I love cranberries, so I was super excited to try this salami. I found this one to be quite salty with a nice combination of savoury and sweet. It tasted really great with cheddar cheese and crackers.

Mild Smoked Chubber

The smoked chubber was nice and mild (just the way I like it), and I really enjoyed the smoky flavour. This was Chris’ least favourite because he thought it was a little bland in comparison to the stronger flavours of the other sausages, but for me it was just right.

We both really enjoyed the variety of salami in the September box. I enjoyed the milder turkey and pork salamis, especially the Merlot variety, while Chris was all about the spicy salami. His favourite was the venison. The entire Carnivore Club experience was a lot of fun, and both Chris and I enjoyed the new-to-us types of salami!
