Perfect Belgium Waffles take a little time to prepare, so allow yourself some extra time before brunch! This recipe makes about 10 waffles!
You will need:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 2 large eggs, separated
- 1 1/2 cups 2% milk
- 1 cup margarine melted (and cooled) (I use Becel Original)
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- syrup or fresh whipped cream and berries
- In large bowl, combine your dry ingredients.
- In a second bowl, beat egg yolks and then add milk, butter and vanilla. Mix well.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with a hand-mixer until stiff peaks form. Fold gently into batter.
- Preheat your NHL Waffle Maker.
- Add 1/2 cup of batter and cook until golden brown.
Making waffles with a new waffle maker always takes some trial and error, so I am going to share with you my experience. Learn from it!
First, using a paper towel or a pastry brush, lightly oil both the bottom and upper grill plates (or use cooking spray). I suggest doing this each time you make a batch of waffles (just at the beginning). Plug in your waffle maker to heat up.
When the indicator light tells you the waffle maker is hot enough, you’re ready to make your first waffle.
First attempt: The instructions say to use 3/4 to 1 cup batter to make your waffle. DO NOT DO THIS! If you use 3/4 cup or more of the batter, you’re going to have an awful mess to clean up and a not-so-pretty waffle (that still tastes great but isn’t picture perfect).
Luckily the silicone sides are removable for washing!
Second attempt: Use 1/2 cup (AND NO MORE) batter for your waffle. Spread out the batter slightly before closing the lid and cook for a few minutes. You will have to play around with time to get them the way you want. Fluffy waffles will take a few minutes, crispy waffles will take close to 5 minutes.
You might need to trim the waffles slightly to get the perfect NHL symbol (only if it bothers you)!
The kids LOVED these waffles. Kristopher, who has a sensory disorder that is very food-centric, LOVED them. He has never eaten my home-made waffles before but he was excited to eat the NHL ones. He’s even requested that I make more so he can take them for lunch this week at school.
The waffles are a really good size, and the kids and I only needed one each. My waffle recipe is sweet, and Kristopher said he thought it tasted like a Tim Horton’s plain donut (he ate it plain without syrup). The rest of us ate ours with freshly made whipped cream, lightly sweetened, and fresh sliced strawberries.
Regular clean up is easy, just wipe with a damp cloth.
The NHL Waffle Maker is a fun addition to any kitchen, especially those who love NHL Hockey like I do.
