The last time we went on a road trip to Victoria was in 2008. There were five of us for that trip: Chris, myself, and my sons Travis, Taylor, and Thomas (who was just 11 months old). I was very pregnant with my fourth son at the time, so although the trip was fun I was so uncomfortable. By early 2010 we had five boys, and road trips were set aside.

2017 sees us with four boys living at home: Taylor (20), Thomas (10), Kristopher (8), and Hayden (7). 2017 also sees us embarking on our very first family road trip in nine years! In August, we’ll be driving from Calgary to Victoria. My youngest two boys will see the mountains and the ocean for the very first time, and I’ve been in planning mode for months!

When planning our trip, the only store that comes to mind is Canadian Tire. We love Canadian Tire because it is the ultimate one-stop shop for all of our automotive, home and pet needs all year round. I love that Canadian Tire carries items and brands that are made for life in Canada, and they have everything we need to have a safe and stress-free road trip experience!

  • Emergency Vehicle Kit  ✔
  • First Aid Kit  ✔
  • Sunscreen/Bug Spray (for our stops)  ✔
  • Cooler  ✔
  • Snacks/Beverages  ✔
  • Small hand held games, toys,  puzzles and colouring books (to keep the kids busy and occupied in between rest stops)  ✔
  • Batteries  ✔
  • Travel pillows and blankets to help keep us comfortable on our long drive  ✔
  • Blanket and/or seat covers to protect the seats from all those snacks and spills that are sure to happen!  ✔
  • Gas, Oil, Windshield Wiper Fluid  ✔

Of course, getting prepared for our Road Trip isn’t just about making sure the kids are comfortable. We need to make sure the truck is ready and one of the most important steps is an oil change. Quaker State® Ultimate Durability™ Full Synthetic Motor Oil is our go-to oil for all our DIY oil changes. One thing that hasn’t changed between 2008 and 2017 is our trust of Quaker State Oil to keep our truck running smoothly.

We love shopping at Canadian Tire for our oil needs because they have the best selection. It is so easy to find Quaker State oil because the bright green bottles stand out so we are able to quickly grab our oil and continue on with our shopping.

What makes Quaker State® Ultimate Durability™ Full Synthetic Motor Oil our go-to oil for our truck?

  • Quaker State gives us more durability and more honesty
  • a great oil at a really great price, especially at Canadian Tire
  • their oil is put through the wringer to make sure that it delivers the promised results every time. Even after hundreds of thousands of miles of severe real-world driving, it still performs!
  • with the addition of a fuel-saving additive there is more durability because your oil stays fresher longer!
  • more engine life – as the engine temperature increases, heat-activated viscosity improves and anti-wear additives kick in to help maintain oil thickness which helps extend your engine life
  • there is more performance through superior lubrication flow and pumpability in below-freezing temperatures
  • Quaker State, and Canadian Tire, are made for life in Canada

What does all this mean to me? It means that I trust using Quaker State Oil is good for our truck, and will help keep our truck running smoothly on the roads during our trip so we make it home safely! Use the oil necessary for your car or truck, as specified in your owner’s manual and be sure to check local Canadian Tire stores for availability!

When changing your oil, make sure you take all of the necessary safety precautions such as placing an extra tire, large rock, piece of lumber, etc., behind your tire to prevent it from rolling while lifted on the jack.

Always dispose of your used oil appropriately. Never flush your motor oil or pour it down the drain. Not only will it harm your pipes, it is dangerous to the environment. Make sure you check with your city or town on how to safely dispose of your used motor oil.

Here in Calgary, Motor oil can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off areas at select fire stations and also at the Throw ‘n’ Go areas at The City landfills. There is no charge, and you can take up to 20 litres of household chemicals per week.  Empty oil containers can also be taken in for safe disposal.

Road Trip from Calgary to Victoria

This will be our first family road trip in almost a decade. This will also be the first time my youngest two boys will be in a vehicle for longer than about an hour and a half, so I’ve planned quite a few rest stops along the way including one over-night stop. To make sure that we are stopping every 1-2 hours, I have included approximate driving times in between stops, and possible attractions to visit! Most stops will see us having a bite to eat and looking for places for the boys to play and stretch their legs with one over night stop. We will be doing the same route coming home, so will split up some of the attractions so our road trips are not exactly the same.

  • Starting point: Calgary, AB
  • 1 hour 30 minutes: Canmore, AB

  • 1 hour 50 minutes: Revelstoke, BC
    Meadows in the Sky Parkway

I don’t know about the kids, but I am looking forward to escaping to Beautiful British Columbia for a couple of weeks, and with the help of Canadian Tire and Quaker State Oil,  I  have peace of mind that we will have everything we need for the perfect road trip experience! And, if we need to pick up supplies along the way, Canadian Tire will be there for us in one of their British Columbia locations!

  1. Great tips! You have some items on your checklist that I didn’t think of. Adding them to my list now. #client

  2. I love how you have scheduled regular stops! My family is all grown now, but we do head out on an annual road trip from Ontario to PEI and those “pit stops” are a must!!
