I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I am a meal planner. We do not eat spontaneously in my house (ever). Even spontaneous meals are planned out (such as eating out for birthdays). There are several reasons why I meal plan each week.
- There is no scrambling with what to make for dinner. I know what is for dinner, and I have all the necessary ingredients on hand.
- I have a large family, so it helps me to stay within my grocery budget (which some months is pretty strict).
- I purchase what we need so there is less waste, and I incorporate leftovers as part of our weekly meals (using leftover vegetables for example, or having a left-over mix and match night).
- It helps to keep me organized, and alleviates the stress of dinner-time.
In the past, I have done my meal planning exclusively with pencil and paper. I’ve even bought expensive meal planning agendas, calendars and note-pads to help facilitate my menu plans and grocery lists.
Now, meal planning paperwork is in the past. The future is in electronic meal planning. We are all so connected on our cell phones and tablets now, that it is only natural that we take meal planning to an electronic app. I know for myself, I never leave home without my phone but I have forgotten my paper grocery list before (many times). With the “Recipe Calendar” app, I always have my meal plan and my grocery list on me so there is no trying to remember my meal plan, or my ingredient list.
“Recipe Calendar” is currently only available on Google Play (but there are plans to release a version to iOS soon). “Recipe Calendar” is easy to use, and makes meal planning easier and stress-free!
To download the app for free, go to the Google Play store. You will need to create an account. Once signed in, you can select if you want to make your own meal plan or if you want to select one that has already been created. When creating your account, you can add how many people you are cooking for, which will update the ingredient amounts in each recipe (and the shopping list).
I love that there are already interesting ready-made meal plans available including plans for specialty diets such as Paleo, Vegetarian, Weight loss, Low-Carb, budget friendly, among others.
When meal planning, I prefer to make my own meal plans that work for my family. I know what my boys will eat, and I know the approximate prices of ingredients that are available to me. For me, this is what works best! “Recipe Calendar” not only has ready-made plans, but I am able to create my own plans as well. I do, however, love looking at other menu plans for inspiration!
One of the other advantages to this app is that it includes recipes, of varying difficulty, plus calorie content for different foods (which is great if you are watching your calorie intake). *Calorie content is only available on the Pro-version.
The app has filters for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as brunch and snacks. You can truly plan out each and every meal plus snack, and take the guess work out of what to eat while making sure you have all the ingredients on hand!
To try it out for the first time, I picked a ready-made meal plan. I picked Budget Saver Family Meals.
You can tap on an icon with a list and found that there is a community of meal planners. I really like that I am able to send recommended dishes to my friends and that I can also subscribe to people who like the same meals as me. This is a really great feature.
There is a community of other users who write recipes and create meal plans. When you follow, you will receive notifications of new recipes and plans that are created.
As an added bonus, you can ask your husband/wife/partner, children, parents, roommates, etc. to follow you, and they can send you recipes that they like or want to try for inclusion into your meal plans so that everyone is happy!
Going back to the meal plan I picked, which is found on the main screen of the app (and you can get there by tapping the Back button), there is a floating button with a shipping basket. When you click it, you will be taken to the grocery list. If you click the item in the grocery list, it will mark as being purchased so you can easily keep track of what you have, and what you still need to buy. I really liked that the list is organized in sections and not by meal, making it easy to use while grocery shopping.
Now that the shopping is complete, with the help of the grocery list, we get to the fun part: the cooking and the eating! Click the recipe to open up the details. The recipe will contain the ingredients, directions, and (for the Pro-version only) a timer and nutrition facts.
Every user is able to add their recipes and meal plans to the app, as well as save recipes and meal plans in their “favourites.” “Recipe Calendar” is a great tool for keeping track of your meals, as well as finding new meals to help add extra variety to your routine!
Currently “Recipe Calendar” is only available for Android (Google Play). To find it, type “Recipe Calendar” in your Google Play app or by clicking here.
