Pigs & Beasts: Sterling Children’s Books – September New Releases

Sterling Children’s Books

Maurice the Unbeastly & Rufus Blasts Off!

September 2017 releases

I love to add to our book collection on a monthly basis, especially for the kids. I find that if the kids have a wide assortment of books, with new books added on a regular basis, they enjoy reading more and don’t get bored with it. We love books that are imaginative, fun to read, with interesting illustrations.  This month, two of the books we added to our bookshelf are Maurice the Unbeastly and Rufus Blasts Off!

Maurice the Unbeastly

by Amy Dixon and Illustrated by Karl James Mountford

Beasts roar! Beasts destroy! Every beast does – except Maurice.

With his melodious voice, fondness for kale, and unfailing politeness, Maurice isn’t quite like the other beasts. Concerned, Mama and Papa send their beastie to the Abominable Academy for Brutish Beasts to learn how to behave badly. Will Maurice master growling, scowling, snarling, and howling? Or will he prove that being different is a good thing after all?

This frightfully unbeastly tale about staying true to yourself is for everyone who’s just a little bit different – and happy to be so!

What we liked:

I liked the underlying message about being true to yourself and how it is okay to be different. I think this is a wonderful message, and I love how Amy Dixon goes about it in a fun, approachable way that is relatable to both kids and adults alike. I think that Maurice the Unbeastly is a great book to read with your children when talking about self-esteem, and about being themselves. Hayden liked the monster drawings, the fun action, and the unidentified “creature-creature” (aka: a dog).

ABOUT the author:

Amy Dixon is the author of Marathon Mouse and Sophie’s Animal Parade (both Sky Pony). She and her husband Rob wrangle their four beasts in Clovis, CA.

Visit her at amydixonbooks.com and follow her on twitter at @dixonamy12.

ABOUT the illustrator:

Karl James Mountford has been drawing and painting since he was a kid. Born in Germany, he was brought up in the UK, and currently lives in Wales, where his sketchbooks rarely get a day off. This is his first picture book.

Rufus Blasts Off!

by Kim T. Griswell and Illustrated by Valeri Gorbachev

Rufus the Pig has already gone to school and sailed the seven seas on a pirate ship. Now, our persistent pink friend dreams of the Moon, the stars, and Mars – so he bids his mateys goodbye and reports for duty at the space centre!

Upon arrival, Commander Luna insists that pigs are not allowed in space – pigs pester the pilot, do loop-the-loops in the cabin, and always want to push buttons. No matter what Rufus tries, Commander Luna holds firm … until she learns that she needs someone to read a book life from the Red Planet.

Will the mission be scrubbed, or will Rufus finally blast off?

Rufus Blasts Off! (Sterling Children’s Books, September 2017) is a sci-fi fantastic follow-up to the successfully and critically acclaimed Rufus Goes to School and Rufus Goes to Sea. This latest Rufus tale will appeal to children who love to read and gaze at the stars!

What we liked:

What I liked most about Rufus Blasts Off! is that Rufus had a dream, and he persisted. He didn’t give up even when he was told no, over and over again. He kept trying, and he didn’t give up! Hayden liked that the main character was a Pig (because bacon says OINK – inside joke from his toddler years), and he liked that most of the words were easy enough that he was able to read this on his own with very minimal help from me.

ABOUT the author:

Kim T. Griswell spends her days writing and editing children’s books. She spent six years developing children’s books for Portable Press, three years as a Senior Editor for Boyds Mills Press, and six years as a Coordinating Editor of Highlights for Children. Kim has taught writing workshops all over the country, including  for the Highlights Foundation. She has published hundreds of short stories, articles, and columns in magazines and books. Kim is the author of two previous picture books about our intrepid pink hero: Rufus Goes to School and Rufus Goes to Sea (both from Sterling and Oregon Book Awards finalists). She lives in Ashland, OR.

Visit Kim at kimgriswell.com and on twitter at @kimgriswell.

ABOUT the illustrator:

Valerie Gorbachev emigrated from his native Ukraine to the US in 1991, and now lives in Brookyn, NY. He has written and/or illustrated more than 50 children’s books, including Big Little Hippo (2016), the first two Rufus stories, Rufus Goes to School and Rufus Goes to Sea (all Sterling), as well as Turtle’s Penguin Day and The Giant Hug by Sandra Horning (both Knopf).

Both books take us on grand adventures of being who you are, no matter what others say, and over-coming other people’s expectations. You are good enough just the way you are, and if you believe in yourself, others will believe in you too! Each story is the perfect addition to every child’s book collection!
